What is fatty liver?
Hepatic steatosis is a common liver condition that is also known as fatty liver. This occurs as fat accumulates in the liver.
It’s normal to have a low to moderate amount of fat in your liver, but too much of it can be a health issue.
The liver helps process the ingredients present in the food and beverages and filters harmful substances and toxins from your blood.
Too much liver fat can cause inflammation of the liver, which can damage its tissues and create scarring. Such scarring can, in severe cases, lead to liver failure.
One type of fatty liver disease is known as alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). It occurs in individuals who drink a lot of alcohol.
The other type is a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or NAFLD, that occurs in people who don’t consume large amounts of alcohol.
